First: The Explosion Process
The big difference between both engines really comes down to this particular process called the explosion process. It’s where engines convert the chemical energy derived from fuel and put it through mechanical energy that creates a number of explosions. Every engine does this, however the main thing to look for is how it’s actually done.
For gasoline, the fuel is first mixed with air, followed by the piston rising and compressing the gas and air mixture. That mixture is then ignited by the spark plug that produces the flame. From there the piston goes up again and pushes the exhaust out of the exhaust valve.
Diesel is different. First the intake valve opens up to let air in and the piston goes down. From there the piston goes back up and compresses the air which is heated in excess of 540 degrees Celsius. Thirdly, the fuel is injected followed by the ignition and the piston goes back down. Lastly the piston goes back up to push the exhaust out.

Secondly: The Emissions

Studies have shown time and again that the higher the compression ratios are, the higher thermal efficiencies the engine has. This also translates to better fuel economies and thus lower emissions since you are burning less fuel.
Because gasoline is using a lower compression ratio (8:1 to 12:1), they are avoiding fuel auto ignition (also known as engine knock), but they are harming the planet and also your wallet as well.
