A Brief History of Gothic Clothing

admin December 9, 2021

At some point in your life, you might have wondered why people prefer gothic fashion over other forms of clothing. Sure, it’s simple and elegant in some way to another, but it also has a dark vibe that goes in direct contrast with some social standards. Does it make sense? Why would anybody even want to adopt a gothic persona right? In today’s article, we’ll explore this idea to give you some insights on the fashion statement, its characteristics, and why they matter to people. So without any further delays, let’s begin…

A Brief History of Gothic Clothing

When did Gothic Fashion Start?

The early 80s is an eccentric generation, to begin with. It is where newer waves of fashion, technology, music, and lifestyle have started to spring up. In regards to clothing, the 60s and 70s were probably defined by the vibrant outfits of the flower or hippie movement. However, 80s fashion has taken a huge turn. During this period, we saw a wide array of clothing styles, especially among the younger generation. And probably among the most peculiar is the gothic fashion.

Gothic fashion started at the turn of the 70s during the emergence of punk and heavy metal rock music. The style of the clothing is supposed to bridge modern and Victorian (sometimes Edwardian) fashion. It also has several variations that seem to emulate the different eras I have indicated, such as the Deathrock, Aristocrat, Haute Goth, Traditional Goth, and Cybergoth. Although they’re not as popular as before, Goth fashion is still widely prominent around the globe.

Characteristic of Gothic Clothing

As mentioned, gothic fashion is a mirror of 1800s clothing with a modern yet dark and mysterious touch. With this being said—Gothic fashion is hallmarked by their choice of clothing, which is typically dark (particularly a combination of black and white colors). To complement their attire, they pair it up with accessories you usually find in the Victorian era, such as the top hat, corsets, fishnets, and steampunk sunglasses. In addition, it is fused with modern styles like adding eyeliners, dark nail polish, dark makeup, dark lipsticks, etc. And then, you also see accessories like chokers and spiked wristbands, just to name a few.

You get it, right? Everything about the culture is dark, which is supposed to emit an aura of mystery, uniqueness, and mostly an insurgence against the rules of social norms. This is also the reason why they significantly appeal to young people who see themselves as outcasts. Anyway, I will talk more about this in the next chapter. Let’s continue…

Why Do People Wear Gothic Clothing?

Gothic fashion is more than an act of rebellion against society. Nowadays, it takes a newer approach which is mostly driven by a deep desire to express oneself to the public and the people around them. Although the culture is seen as stylish in some way, its philosophy is rather different and far from what most people have in mind. Instead, it is a stand or expression against social norms and extravagance. Again, such a type of ideology greatly appeals to the younger generation, who are at the peak of an identity crisis. We all can relate, right? And we all have been there.

Anyway, this subculture is also defined by their choice of music, which is typically driven to punk music and heavy metal. And the likely reason why this is the case is that such a genre mostly displays heightened emotion to a specific person, event, or society in general. Aside from the beat of the music, the message of the songs is relatable that captures the essence of the individuals’ beliefs and whatever they are experiencing at the moment.

Final Thoughts

Because of the meaning and representation of the Gothic subculture, it would always be an integral part of the current and following generations, and it’d never go out of fashion, in my opinion. In addition, its fashion sense provides a simplistic vibe but is somewhat aesthetically pleasing. This also explains why many people are going for Gothic clothing though they may not necessarily have its philosophy.
