Games based on just a few MBs and offering so much potential was a delight and being released in the 90s, they left us in awe more often than not.

1. Doom (1993)

When we talk about fast-paced first-person shooters from the DOS era, it would be an absolute sin not to mention Doom. This game gave us the absolute thrills and the chills as the players keep on killing waves upon waves of twisted monstrosities. We even remember our PCs rumbling as the hardware tried to keep up with the amazingness this game offered. On top of the action-packed beauty it was, it also introduced us to multiplayer deathmatch options between multiple players and this is something that still lives on the games of today, a relic of the past that has been refined and converted into something we all enjoy.

2. SimCity (1989)

There would hardly be a 90’s gamer out there that isn’t familiar with the SimCity series. The game gave us an open world of creation where the only objective has to experiment, build, and flourish your city. You can spend as much time as you want in your city and take it in any direction possible with the resources available. The game was a huge success and was migrated to MS-DOS consequently based on its potential. It further gave rise to ideas like Sid Meier’s Civilization series and also inspired certain other titles under the Sims brand.

3. Sid Meier’s Civilization (1991)

Not including this beauty in our list of the best DOS games would be unjust. One cannot help but be mesmerized by how much Sid Meier was able to do in a 3MB DOS games with Civilization. A turn-based strategy game, it allows the players to take their civilization through ages from as old as 4000 BC to 2100 AD. The players would engage in a world against AI were to increase your power you have to dominate new cities, wage warfare, and indulge in necessary diplomacies. No wonder Civilization series is still going strong and Sid Meier is still considered a king among turn-based strategy game developers. Since we are huge fans of the series, we would also suggest that you give the latter parts in the series a go. And if you like engaging in multiplayer scenarios, just make sure that your internet connection supports your cause to enjoy the play at its fullest. 4. Command and Conquer: Red Alert (1996)

This has been one of the defining strategy game series of all time. Just imagine a world setting where Albert Einstein is sent back in time to get rid of Adolf Hitler so that Nazi participation doesn’t exist. But, consequently, The Soviet Union takes the helm and now the Allies have to face the Soviets threatening to take over entire Europe. This was the original story of C&C: Red Alert and we all fell in love with the series with well-balanced development of the game including the military units, tactics, and the graphics as per that era. P.S guilty as charged, some of us still enjoy playing this game because its worth it.

5. Blood (1997)

One of the most underrated MS-DOS titles to date has to be Blood. Built on the same development engine as some of the most popular games of that era like Duke Nukem 3d, Blood had so much depth and amazingness to offer that it overshadows smash hits like Quake. The entire horrifying feel of a character as he fights a crazed cult, the supporting vocals, and audio and the color schemes, all satisfyingly kept us at the very edge of our seats. It would not be a stretch to say that this is among the top DOS first-person shooters to date.

6. Scorched Earth (1991)

This time artillery strategy game from Wendell Hicken’s set new milestones for DOS game developers and that with good reason. With a wide number of gameplay settings and tweaks available and a variable AI stance, Scorched Earth introduced amazing replay value to its players. It might not have sold millions of copies but with shareware options, an extended number of masses enjoyed this game worldwide. Oh and let us not forget that this was among the trendsetters for indulging party games where you can cause immeasurable in-game mayhem and enjoy at the same instance.

7. Warcraft: Orcs and Humans (1994)

We have included multiple strategy games on our list because they offer incredible replayability. A personal favorite of ours, Warcraft: Orcs and Humans is a real-time fantasy-based strategy game developed by Blizzard studios that introduced us to strategic and indulging warfare. This was the very first game in the Warcraft series and the popularity of this series is quite undeniable as we saw the awesomely amazing world of The World of Warcraft created behind the idea of this very game. Blizzard also continued the base series and game us Warcraft 3: Reign of Chaos and Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne from which some of your might be familiar with a player made custom map called DOTA. Yes, it also became a full-fledged game on its own and is still enjoyed by players all across the world.
