Beginner’s Guide on Choosing the Right Surfboard

admin March 1, 2021

If you are picking up on the surfer’s lifestyle, getting a surfboard on your own can be an exciting and thrilling venture on its own. Since there are many types of surfboards, sometimes it can be a time consuming and daunting task.

While it helps to get a professional’s help, most often the only way to satisfy your enthusiasm is to explore the arena and find things on your own. Always consider that a surfboard should be longer than your height and should have the buoyancy to keep you afloat in the waves.

There are various types of DHD surfboards, from beginners to experts. A beginner’s board is an important thing that will help you grind and hone your skills in a short time. It will also help boost your confidence, so you can start on the right foot.

Consider the Dimensions and the Surfboard’s Shape

When picking your first surfboard, it is always essential to have the right dimensions. You do not want to end up with a too-small board for your height as it can be difficult to control.

Minimal surfboards are always recommended for beginners which typically have a length of about 7 to 8 feet. It usually has a thickness of 2 5/8 or up to 3” and varying weight based on the rider’s weight.

The bigger you are, the bigger the surfboard.  However, your weight is also an important factor. If you are under 200lbs, you should have a smaller board so it would be easier to paddle or turn. Stick to longer boards if you are on the heavier side because it gives you better maneuverability in the water.

A minimal surfboard should also have rounded noses for better buoyancy and ease of paddling. It would help you catch waves faster and lessen the struggles when riding the wave. Also, make sure that the surfboard’s back is not too thin, so it offers better buoyancy.

Opting for Surfboards with Better Construction

The most common types of surfboards are made from polyester, soft-foam, or epoxy. However, they come in a range of construction types. For beginners, opting for the best board construction allows one to get the most out of the learning experience.

Knowing which types suit your needs will help you achieve better stability and to paddle well because of the higher buoyancy levels. Almost every surf school uses foamy DHD surfboards because of their soft construction.

They are often the best entry-level boards, especially for kids learning the basics of surfing. Although these boards are the most common, they provide little progression since flexible fins compromise performance.

If you aim to better progress, a “hard” surfboard made from epoxy or polyester provides all the necessary benefits. They are long-lasting and will allow you to progress with your surfing journey. A minimal surfboard made of polystyrene foam is better if you want to be a professional surfer.

These boards are not as fragile as a soft-top surfboard. They provide paddling power and allow you to make quick turns. Considering all these factors will help you in your surfing journey.

Additionally, you can progress from a soft-top surfboard to hardboard. What’s important is to get the level of comfortability when in the waters, so you are more confident with your wave rides.
